Emily Caroline Envall was born in Galesburg, Illinois, on 25 November 1869, the oldest child of John and Caroline Peterson Envall, recent immigrants from Sweden. She received less than seven years of formal education in the Galesburg public schools. On 10 January 1889 she entered the Augustana Conservatory of Music at Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois.
